WHAT IS DIGITAL MEDIA? HYBRID COURSE. ALL ASSIGNMENTS CAN COMPLETED REMOTELY AND ASYNCHRONOUS EACH WEEK HAS THREE PRE-RECORDED LECTURES (MTW) FOLLOWED BY ONE INTERACTIVE SESSION (TH). STUDENTS CHOOSE TO COMPLETE THE INTERACTIVE SESSION IN PERSON, ON ZOOM, OR ASYNCHRONOUSLY.
Syllabus Description (from Canvas):
What is the Digital?
How have digital technologies transformed the images we see, the words we read, and the ways we communicate? This class offers a long history of the digital, ranging from 19th century looms to generative AI. We will focus especially on how new technologies transform the work of media production. Topics covered include computer graphics, digital cinema, video games, and women's roles in computer history.
All course requirements can be completed remotely and asynchronously. Students will watch three recorded lectures per week (M-W), then either attend an in-person discussion (Th) or complete a remote alternative. All students will complete one quiz and one short assignment per week.
Catalog Description:
Provides an introduction to media studies, with particular attention to critical concepts including, but not limited to, audience studies, formal analysis, and ideological critique. Specific media analyzed varies. Course overlaps with: TCOM 247.
