When did you know that you wanted to major in CMS?
I first discovered the CMS major when I took a course on music in cinema. I have always loved the role that sound plays in film, but I wanted to learn how to talk about it analytically, and also to see how I could use the content of CMS courses in my own sonic work.

What do you like most about the program?
There is a lot of opportunity within the program to choose what you want to study. I was able to relate each one of my CMS classes back to my interest in sound.

What kinds of activities are you involved with outside of class?
I love to record music and sound design. I sound design for UW School of Drama productions as well as help record for archives with the UW School of Music. I’m involved with the Audio Engineering Society, as well as GRAMMYU, and am starting to get more into sound for film.

Do you have any plans for after graduation?
I am in the midst of starting my own audio editing business and podcast under the name of ChirpSound. So my plan is to focus on expanding both.

You have long been fascinated with music in film. Can you tell us more about that?
I’ve always loved listening to live music and recording it. And the huge orchestrated scores for films are amazing. But I am particularly interested in how sound, including sound design and music, can create an immersive experience in media. I love the creative side of sound design, as well as the emotional connection to music, and want to experiment with both in the work that I do.
