Film and Literature: From East to West

This course will focus on the study of films by a distinct group of directors, namely, those who began their careers in the so-called “Second World” of post-World War II, socialist Eastern Europe, and then moved to the West and made some of the most celebrated Hollywood movies of the 1960s and 70s. These directors include Miloš Forman, Agnieszka Holland, Dušan Makavejev, Roman Polanski, István Szabó, and others. Special attention will be paid to the role of literature and adaptations of literary works. We will watch and discuss films and read selected literary excerpts. All films and readings will be available on Canvas.
