Content

The course inquires into “urban media” — media related to the urban environment. We will explore three situations: (1) Media-saturated urbanism: “urban screens” (from mobile phones to entire buildings that double as screens); (2) The mediation of cities: use of media to represent and modify human use of buildings; (3) The city as a medium: the built environment often functions as a medium in its own right, part of an ecosystem that has been growing ever more influential in the age of digitization and the “smart city.” The course pays special attention to the use of media art; students are encouraged to experiment with creative approaches.

General objectives

During the course, students will acquire skills for analyzing the connection between urban structures and medias, including reading critical texts and related images, responding to these in creative ways, and discussing them with their peers.
