History of Film: 1895-1929
This is an historical survey class, beginning with some of the earliest examples of “moving
pictures” and continuing through major developments in motion-picture technology, industrial
organization, and narrative or expressive techniques that produce the most definitive and most
widely embraced art-form of the 20th century, ending with the introduction of synchronized
sound.
Catalog Description:
Film history from its beginnings in the 1890s through the golden era of silent film in the 1920s. Topics include the invention of major film techniques, the creation of Hollywood and the studios, and movements such as expressionism, constructivism, and surrealism.
