The Boys of St Columb's

Saturday, September 28, 2013 - 7:00pm
Walker-Ames Room, Kane Hall Room 225

Film Screening: The Boys of St Columb's

with commentary by its co-producer Maurice Fitzpatrick (Lecturer in English, University of Cologne)

The documentary fiim which he co-produced (like his book of the same title) offers an informative and inspiring story of the cultural influence of this Catholic grammar school in Derry, which, after the Education Act of 1947 granted free secondary education throughout the United Kingdom, in a single generation provided a launching pad for, among others, the Nobel Laureates Seamus Heaney and John Hume. (It may in fact be the only secondary school able to claim two Nobel winners among its graduates.)  St Columb’s college also includes among its distinguished and influential graduates the playwright Brian Friel, the literary historian and critic Seamus Deane, the songwriter and musician Phil Coulter, and football (i.e., soccer) star and manager Martin O’Neill.
