CMS 397 Struggles for Representation

3:40-5:20  SIG 134

Truth. Reality. Protest. Representation. Revolution. In this current political moment, what do these words mean? How do we decide what is a valid source? Truth and revolution are as relevant today as they have ever been, but it seems their meanings or meaningfulness have changed over time. Focusing primarily on documentaries and other forms of 'truth telling' narratives in Struggles for Representation we will interrogate how these terms have been mobilized in fights for freedom, recognition and advocacy for awareness of vital issues - both environmental and human, with the clear understanding that those may or may not be considered separate. We will look at online media, as well as film and TV. All visual materials will be streaming online to examine how underground, underrepresented communities create platforms for their agendas within public spaces.
